Shenmue 2 a classic on your 360

Welcome to my own personal section on what I am mostly playing. As a web programmer I need down time and killing Germans over the internet although slightly sad is very reliveing.

So what game is this week. A thunderbolt of a 360 title, a classic PC? No its Shenmue 2 on the 360.

As an avid fan of the Sega Dreamcast ( which was killed because of its crap marketing ) and of Shenmue in particular I was most annoyed when Shenmue 2 was rushed onto the DC and all speech was in Japanese with English subtitles it threw me right off, but Sega got it right on the Xbox releasing it with English speaking charachters.

Shenmue II’s gameplay offers as much variety as its story, combining many different gameplay styles culled from a wide range of genres. At its core, the game is basically a hybrid of traditional RPG and action RPG elements–you’ll find that standard exploration, puzzle solving, and character interaction will make up a large part of your time with the game. However, you’ll also find fighting sequences that use a simplified Virtua Fighter-style fighting system, numerous minigames, and quick time events (QTEs), which are timed sequences that require you to quickly match onscreen commands with controller inputs, much like in the classic arcade game Dragon’s Lair. While its main structure is linear, Shenmue II is extremely open-ended in terms of your options. Your main focus is always Ryo’s search for information on his father’s death, but you’ll also find a wealth of diversions, mostly in the form of the minigames. In some cases, the minigames are essential to the main quest, such as working jobs or gambling to earn money in order to progress. However, you’ll also be able to take a break from the high-stress vengeance-seeking lifestyle and play near-perfect ports of classic arcade games such as Space Harrier, Outrun, and Afterburner II, which you’ll come across in your travels. You’ll even be able to do some shopping and spend your hard-earned cash in vending machines bearing assorted toys or on a variety of goods from street vendors.

If you’ve played the original Shenmue, you’re likely to be pleasantly surprised by how much Shenmue II improves on the original’s gameplay. The pacing has been considerably tightened, as has the storytelling. If you’re lost in one of the game’s large environments, talking with one of the locals will often result in that character guiding you exactly to where you need to go. In instances where you’ll have to meet someone or go to a location at a specific time, you’ll have the option to fast-forwarding time and/or warping to a certain location, to minimize the amount of pointless waiting around you have to do. You’ll still be able to roam and pass the time sightseeing if you like, but the new option helps keep the game from getting dull.

Get it on your Xbox from ebay (UK)

The future’s bright the future is green (with some grey)

I have been a Xbox 360 owner for one month now and although I have always been a console lover my love has turned into a dirty lust for this machine. If you haven’t seen one or god forbid ever heard of one then I suggest go and get one buy a copy of Gears of war crank up the volume and sit in awe.

So with my somewhat disturbing joy with my recent purchase I have been looking around with what is coming to the Xbox. With some fantastic games coming out (which I will list in a minute) there are also some exciting tools and media bits and pieces landing on you Xbox soon.

Now for the games that are being developed. There are some awesome looking new titles arriving soon notably Bioshock and Forza Motorsport 2 but these are ommon knowledge. I have looked round for other titles that will be arriving later on in the year and wow there are some shit hot looking games arriving:

Xbox arcade a genius in itself has some massive new games announced including Street Fighter 2 remix and Puzzle Fighter 2 remix as well as a whole host of others. I just want them to release an old arcade classic called Hotrod that would make my year.

Its not just games that every one is hyped up about the emergence of Windows IPTV looks a huge selling point. If you are not aware of what this is or where it has come from I found this on Microsofts web site:

At the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft Corp. today announced a new solution that will bring together two of its leading entertainment products, the Xbox 360™ gaming console and the Microsoft® TV IPTV Edition software platform, to create a unique digital entertainment offering. IPTV on Xbox 360™ is expected to be available to consumers by holiday season 2007 and will be offered by providers that are deploying TV services over broadband networks based on the IPTV Edition software platform. The solution was unveiled during Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates’ CES keynote address Jan. 7.

The integration of a video gaming console with Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services is intended to deliver a first-of-its-kind entertainment experience. IPTV on Xbox 360 is expected to give consumers all the advantages of an advanced TV service along with the benefits of next-generation gaming, as well as unique new capabilities that the integrated solution brings. Xbox Live®, the largest online social network in the living room, will be seamlessly integrated into the experience, providing consumers with a wide range of community-based features, such as voice chat, sending and receiving text and voice messages, and accessing Xbox Live Marketplace, all while watching TV. For example, while a TV viewer is enjoying his favorite football game, he can receive a message from a friend inviting him to a join voice chat while watching the game, or to play a game of their own with EA SPORTS™ “Madden NFL 07″ on Xbox Live.

With that said it the future looks bright and how can the PS3 with its huge price possibly compete, I personally do not know but am sure that Sony will bring some new fangled idea that will win everyone over like a microphone thats wireless (who knows). With all that being said 1-0 to Microsoft.
